Interview with Dani and Cam from Take the Bait

Cindy: Hi Dani! Thanks for meeting me for coffee and agreeing to chat with me and my readers.

Dani: <laughing> I’m always down for a latte. Can’t get enough caffeine when I’m prepping a case for trial.

Cindy: How’s that going, anyway? I’m sorry I wrote you such a prickly client to defend.

Dani: Oh, he’s not the problem. It’s that darned prosecutor you cooked up for me who’s the royal pain in my butt.

Cindy: Speak of the devil. Here comes Cameron, now.

Dani: <glaring at me> Did you invite him and forget to tell me?

Cindy: <throwing up my hands> No! Pinkie swear! But this café is directly across the street from the courthouse.

Dani: <as Cameron approaches our table> I object, Your Honor! Or should I say, Your Author.

Cam: <raises an eyebrow, sliding into the seat across from her> On what grounds, counselor? And, hi, Cindy. Thought I might run into you two, here.

Dani: <cheeks suspiciously pink> Looking that good in a suit should be illegal. You’ll prejudice the jury.

Cam: Says the woman who shows up to court looking like a movie star. <Loosens his tie> Though, I have to ask. Why do you always wear those…umm…sensible shoes?

Dani: You mean ugly shoes? Because I take the subway and walk to work. Not all of us drive Italian sports cars worth more than my student loans.

Cam: It’s German, actually. And I’d be happy to give you a ride anytime.

Dani: Oh, that’d go over great with my boss. Fraternizing with the enemy.

Cam: Enemy? I’m wounded. I thought we had a special relationship. You turn down my generous plea deal, and in return, I make your life difficult.

Dani: <rolling her eyes at Cindy> Did you have to give him a Teflon ego to go with those devastating looks of his?

Cindy: <shrugging> Sorry. I thought you deserved a worthy opponent.

Dani:  How many cases have you won this month, Cam? Five? Ten?

Cam: Sixteen. Yours will make seventeen.

Dani: Dream on, counselor. My client’s innocent until proven guilty.

Cam: Your client was caught doing 170 on the Thruway with enough alcohol in his system to pickle a horse.

Dani: Details, details. <waves her hand dismissively> I’ll come up with a perfectly reasonable explanation for the jury.

Cam: Like what? His speedometer was broken and someone spiked his Red Bull?

Dani: Hey, that’s not bad. Mind if I use it?

Cam: <grinning> You’re something else, Wellford. Most attorneys would be begging to plea out by now.

Dani: I’m not most attorneys. And you’re not as intimidating as you think you are, hotshot.

Cam: No? <leans back, crossing his arms> Is that why you keep stealing looks at me?

Dani: I’m looking at your tie, not you, and wondering if it cost more than my rent. <smirks> Besides, you’re the one who can’t stop staring at my legs.

Cam: I was admiring your sensible shoes.

Dani: Ha ha. Don’t you have some other poor defense attorney to terrorize?

Cam: Nope. Just you. Only you…
